It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, in the run-up to any big event you will entertain all sorts of weird and wild thoughts. Random chatter will zip through your head. You’ll ride an emotional roller coaster, fluctuating between excitement and anxiety, or being amped up and strung out.
One minute you might bathe in confidence only to trade it for a heavy serving of doubt. A displaced pendulum, you’re an oscillating ball in motion desperately seeking some semblance of equilibrium.
Below are some of the things that have been on my mind as I get closer to trading punches with someone who isn’t Coach. It’s an upside-down of the mental variety. Mindless blather (ego-based) that has come to roost, and takes up most of the space in my head.
What the fuck.
You. Have. Got this.
What’s up? You’ve been gassing out early the last couple of weeks…
Dear Ego, please shut your mouth.
You’re too hard on yourself. Baby, you’ve got speed and check out that reach!
For heaven’s sake, chillax.
And stop getting all verklempt. Seriously, it’s distracting.
Sleep. Eat. Work. Train.
And do it all over again. Rinse. Repeat.
Remember “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” NO ONE is exempt from that fact.
What you’re doing might not matter to anyone but that’s all right. It’s a big deal to you so own that shit.
In the end, this is all about the journey, remember? The distance you covered counts for something.
You will survive your terror and come out on the other side. Grander. Wiser. Brighter. I promise.
You’ve totally got this, Sugar.
Remember, I’ve always got your back.
